Sustainability in video production

As the demand for video content continues to grow, it's important to consider the environmental impact of video production. While the technology and techniques used in video production have become more advanced and efficient over the years, there are still many ways in which the industry can become more sustainable. In this blog post, we will discuss some practical steps that can be taken to reduce the environmental impact of video production, and we will also highlight the efforts that we at Just Upstairs, are making in our own production practices more sustainable.

One of the biggest challenges in making video production more sustainable is the amount of energy required to power the equipment used on set. This includes not only the cameras and lighting but also computers and other electronics used for editing and post-production. To reduce energy consumption, it's important to use energy-efficient equipment and to turn off any equipment that is not in use. Additionally, using renewable energy sources, such as solar power, or green efficient generators where possible can help to reduce the carbon footprint of video production.

At Just Upstairs, we have implemented several measures to reduce their energy consumption. We have switched to using LED lighting on set where possible which is more energy-efficient than traditional lighting. Another area where video production can become more sustainable is in the use of materials. For example, many sets and props are constructed using non-recyclable materials, such as Styrofoam and plastic. By using more sustainable materials, such as wood and biodegradable plastics, the environmental impact of video production can be greatly reduced. Additionally, reusing and recycling materials whenever possible can help to reduce waste and conserve resources.

Just Upstairs has also made efforts to reduce our use of non-recyclable materials. We have switched to using wood and other sustainable materials for our sets and props whenever possible. We have also implemented a recycling program at our studio, which allows us to recycle a wide range of materials, including paper, plastic, and metal.

Transportation is another important factor to consider in the sustainability of video production. The need to transport equipment and crew to and from locations can generate a significant amount of emissions. To reduce the environmental impact of transportation, it's important to carefully plan shoot schedules, accommodation, and kit rental locations to minimise the distance travelled.

Just Upstairs has taken steps to reduce its transportation emissions by using hybrid vehicles whenever possible. We have also implemented a carpooling program for their employees and crew, which encourages them to share rides to and from the studio or locations. This has helped to reduce the number of vehicles on the road and has significantly reduced their transportation emissions.

In conclusion, there are many ways in which the video production industry can become more sustainable. By using energy-efficient equipment, and sustainable materials, reducing transportation emissions, and promoting sustainability in the content that is produced,
